Hakuho disposed of Aminishiki in short measure to remain undefeated on the eighth day of the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament on Sunday.

Hakuho, who is aiming to surpass sumo legend Taiho by claiming his 33rd career Emperor's Cup for the all-time record, improved to 8-0 and notched his 600th victory at sumo's highest rank.

Fellow yokozuna Harumafuji bounced back from the previous day's defeat with a no-holds-barred throat assault of Kasei to stay hot in the title race at 7-1 along with ozeki Kisenosato, who is making a run to become the first Japanese-born rikishi to win a championship since the 2006 New Year basho.
