Sochi Olympian Tatsuki Machida said Sunday he will retire from competition following the completion of the national figure skating championships.

The 24-year-old Machida, who finished fourth in the men's competition, was selected to compete at the upcoming world championships by the Japan Skating Federation, but turned down his spot on the team.

His spot at the March 23-29 worlds in Shanghai was handed to Takahito Mura, who was fifth in the nationals at Nagano Big Hat.

Machida, who finished fifth at this year's Sochi Games, followed that up with the men's silver medal at the worlds in Saitama.

This season, he won the Skate America event in the ISU Grand Prix series.

Machida finishes his career with four career Grand Prix victories.
