Nami Inamori scored an ippon against countrywoman Sara Asahina to capture the women's over 78-kilogram category at the Grand Slam Tokyo judo tournament on Sunday.

The 21-year-old Inamori executed an ouchigari inner leg sweep against the 18-year-old Asahina for her first career Grand Slam victory at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.

Inamori defeated London Olympic gold medalist Idalys Ortiz of Cuba in the second round and compatriot Kane Yamabe in the semifinals. Megumi Tachimoto won a bronze medal, but Yamabe withdrew from her match for third place with an injury.

"I had trained to get bigger opponents off-balance. It was exhilarating," said the 164-cm Inamori after toppling the 176-cm Asahina, who weighed in at 130 kg. "I pressed forward for the full four minutes today. I was determined to give it all of my strength."

At 78 kg, Ruika Sato lost to London Olympic gold medalist Kayla Harrison of the United States in the final. Shori Hamada took a bronze medal in the category.

In the men's bracket, Daiki Nishiyama fell in a close contest against South Korean Gwak Dong-han in the 90-kg final. Countryman Mashu Baker captured a bronze medal.

In the over 100-kg weight class, Renat Saidov of Russia emerged the victor after beating Georgian Lavani Matiashvili in the final. Keita Iwao defeated world silver medalist Ryu Shichinohe in a match for third place to claim a bronze.

Incheon Asian Games champion Takashi Ojitani downed Daiki Kamikawa for the other bronze medal.

At 100 kg, South Korean Cho Gu-ham captured the gold with a victory over Cyrille Maret of France. Kaihan Takagi, who was eliminated in the quarterfinals, finished the highest for Japan.

In the three-day tournament, Japanese men won three events, while the women topped the podium in four of the seven weight categories for the host nation.
