Nao Kodaira beat Olympic champion Lee Sang-hwa of South Korea in the women's 500 meters to claim her first World Cup win in the second event of the season on Friday.

Kodaira powered home in 38.05 seconds, while Lee had to make do with a runner-up finish in 38.18. Judith Hesse of Germany was third in 38.95.

Yuya Oikawa's 16th-place finish was the best by a Japanese sprinter in the men's 500 won by Russia's Pavel Kulizhnikov in 34.94.

Meanwhile, Nana Takagi was disqualified in the women's 5,000 meters. Germany's Claudia Pechstein finished first in 7 minutes, 07.77 seconds.
