Japan international Shinji Kagawa failed to make an impact after coming on as a second-half substitute Tuesday in Manchester United's 2-1 win over Valencia, the club's final warmup ahead of the new Premier League season.

He came on for Juan Mata just after the hour mark but was unable to impress and didn't put forward a case for a place in the starting lineup for next Saturday's season opener at home against Swansea City.

Darren Fletcher's deflected strike was canceled out by Rodrigo Moreno's sharp finish, but Belgian midfielder Marouane Fellaini hit an injury-time winner at Old Trafford.

Kagawa looks set for another tough campaign at United. The former Dortmund star has come on as substitute in all six of United's preseason friendlies and has failed to score.

Kagawa hardly featured for United last season and finished the campaign without a single goal. He then had a poor World Cup as Japan was knocked out in the first round in Brazil in June after taking just one point from three games.
