Chono leads Dragons past Dragons in 10th

Hisayoshi Chono went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, featuring a tiebreaking RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning that lifted Yomiuri to a 7-6 sayonara victory over the Chunichi Dragons on Saturday.

The Central League-leading Giants moved a season high 14 games above .500.

Ryota Katsuki (2-0), Yomiuri’s fourth pitcher, threw a scoreless ninth for the win. Giants starter Toshiya Sugiuchi yielded three runs — two earned — on six hits in seven innings of work. Rookie Katsuki Matayoshi (4-1) took the loss.

Kazuhiro Wada, who went 3-for-3, came a single shy of the cycle. Shuichi Murata hit a solo drive in the seventh and Yoshinobu Takahashi went deep with a three-run blast off reliever Takuya Asao to cap the four-run frame.

Chunichi lost its third game in a row.

Swallows 4, Carp 3

At Mazda Stadium, Shingo Kawabata broke a 3-3 tie with a ninth-inning RBI single against Kam Mickolio (0-1) as Yakult edged Hiroshima to win its first game since resuming league play. Rookie lefty Keiji Iwahashi (1-0) got one out in the eighth to post his first career win.

Tigers 3, BayStars 0

At Yokohama Stadium, Hanshin rookie starter Suguru Iwazaki (3-3) combined with two relievers to blank Yokohama, leading his team to its fourth win in a row.

Iwazaki scattered five hits, struck out eight and walked two to win his first decision since April 24.

PACIFIC LEAGUE

Lions, 6, Buffaloes 1

At Kobe’s Hotto Motto Field, Takumi Kuriyama helped spark a rally with a game-tying RBI double in the sixth inning and then made it stand with a grand slam off Takahiro Mahara (1-3) in the seventh as Seibu came back to beat PL frontrunner Orix.

Eagles 7, Hawks 5

At Fukuoka’s Yafuoku Dome, Tohoku Rakuten staged a dramatic rally to overturn a three-run deficit with a five-run ninth inning, featuring Ginji Akaminai’s two-run double and a sac fly by Andruw Jones, as the Eagles defeated Fukuoka Softbank.

Rookie Yusuke Nishimiya (2-0) won in relief.

Fighters 9, Marines 3

At Chiba’s QVC Marine Field, Fighters double-duty man Shohei Otani erupted with a pair of two-run home runs as Hokkaido Nippon Ham routed Chiba Lotte.

Otani, who is 7-1 with a 2.49 ERA in the rotation, had a blast off Takahiro Fujioka (4-5) to left in the first and another to the stands in right in the ninth.

The Fighters pounded out 12 hits.
