HALLE, GERMANY – Kei Nishikori defeated Gael Monfils of France 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 on Wednesday to book a spot in the Gerry Weber Open quarterfinals.
World No. 12 Nishikori played a strong match coming back from the left hip injury that forced him out of the Madrid Open final in May and hampered him during a first-round loss at Roland Garros.
He overpowered the 20th-ranked Monfils in the first set, ranging freely over the court and varying the tempo of his shots. Though Monfils controlled the second set, Nishikori came back in the third set to win key rallies and secure the match in just under 90 minutes.
“Monfils is a player I was looking forward to facing, and I’m happy to have won,” Nishikori said.
“I am fully recovered from my injury (in May). It didn’t give me any pain or trouble today at all. I tried to play an aggressive match, and this win boosts my confidence on grass courts.”
