Iwakuma sidelined with injured finger

AP

Seattle Mariners right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma said Friday the middle finger of his right hand will need to remain in a splint for three more weeks, making it unlikely he will be in the rotation at the start of the season.

The 32-year-old Iwakuma felt pain in the finger while working out in January but continued practicing until it was examined by team doctors and diagnosed as a sprained tendon.

In 2013, Iwakuma owned the third-lowest ERA in the American League at 2.66. He went 14-6 over 33 starts.
