Reliever Junichi Tazawa avoided salary arbitration and reached an agreement with the Boston Red Sox on Friday.
Tazawa, who emerged as a reliable setup man in the Red Sox' bullpen and helped them win the World Series last season, will see his salary rise from $815,000 to $1,275,000, according to a report in the Boston Herald.
Tazawa went 5-4 in 71 regular-season games with a 3.16 ERA. He had a 1.23 ERA in 13 postseason appearances.
On a day when many players reached agreements with their major league clubs, the Detroit Tigers agreed on a one-year, $15,525,000 deal with 2013 American League Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer, according to MLB.com.
The Baltimore Orioles reportedly handed first baseman Chris Davis a significant raise, his salary soaring from $3.3 million to $10.35 million, plus incentives, MLB.com said.
Davis was due for a sizable raise after leading the majors with 53 home runs.
