Forward Osako joins Munich squad

Kyodo

German second-division club TSV 1860 Munich on Tuesday unveiled Japan forward Yuya Osako, who has joined the team from J.League first-division side Kashima Antlers.

“In order to improve, you need to change your environment,” the 23-year-old told a news conference. “The biggest thing is to accept challenges.”

With the World Cup kicking off in June, Osako said he felt the need to raise his game.

“I thought staying put wouldn’t do,” he said. “In order to step up a level, I want to think only about scoring.”

Osako is on contract with the Lions through June 2017. The team has not formally decided on a number although it originally announced the forward would wear No. 18.

“We are pleased to be able to acquire a player of this class,” sporting director Florian Hinterberger said.

“Osako is looking to produce for the club so that he can earn a place at the World Cup. In that process, our attack will become stronger.”
