Japan will bid to host the 2023 Women's World Cup, the Japan Football Association said Thursday.

The JFA was originally planning to campaign for the 2019 tournament, and already had FIFA President Sepp Blatter's blessing to host the women's international showpiece.

But with the Rugby World Cup and Olympics coming to Japan in 2019 and 2020, respectively, the JFA felt it made more sense to organize its first Women's World Cup in a free year.

Japan would also be able to make full use of the facilities that will have been renovated for the Olympics.

"The new National Stadium will be available for us to use, and we can hold a much better tournament then," JFA Vice President Kozo Tashima said.

Nadeshiko Japan won the 2011 Women's World Cup.
