ZAGREB – Olympic champion Kim Yu-na overcame a fall to clinch victory at the Golden Spin on Saturday as the South Korean skater made her season debut following an injury lay-off with an impressive triumph.
The 23-year-old world champion had been off the ice since picking up a metatarsal injury in her right foot in September, but is working herself back to competitive shape in an attempt to defend her Olympic title at the Sochi Games in February.
Despite falling on a triple Lutz in her free program, she then completed her performance to “Adios Nonino” with no further setbacks to take victory with a score of 204.49 points.
Former world champion Mao Asada had finished on 204.02 points earlier in the day in Fukuoka to win the Grand Prix Final.
Two-time world champion Miki Ando, returning to competition after having a baby girl in April, also skated in Zagreb and scored 176.82 points.
The Zagreb event was Ando’s last before the 2007 and 2011 world champion attempts to make the Olympics at Japanese nationals later this month.
