Japan's Yuzuru Hanyu took the lead in the men's short program in his season debut Saturday at the Finlandia Trophy.
The 18-year-old Hanyu, who is aiming to compete in his first Winter Olympics in Sochi next year, had a triple axel downgraded but landed a quad en route to 84.66 points, taking first place ahead of Russia's Sergei Voronov.
Voronov scored 79.74 and American Douglas Razzano was third with 71.89. Japan's Kento Nakamura was fifth with 67.83.
"It's the first time I have messed up a triple axel in a while but that is just the way it goes," said Hanyu. "A quad in the short program got me off to a good start and that has given me confidence."
In the women's short program Akiko Suzuki scored 64.57 and was in second place behind Russia's Julia Lipnitskaia (65.49).
American Vanessa Lam was third with 56.31 and Japan's Risa Shoji was eighth with 44.71.
