World No. 1 Serena Williams has pulled out of the upcoming Pan Pacific Open, organizers said Thursday.
The American has withdrawn from the Sept. 22-28 tournament in Tokyo “due to fatigue and needing more time to recover from the summer.”
She is the latest big name to withdraw after Russian pin-up Maria Sharapova last week said she was skipping the tournament to recover from a right shoulder injury.
“I’m disappointed to have to withdraw from the Pan Pacific Open, which I was very much looking forward to playing this year,” Williams said in a press release.
“Unfortunately with the number of matches I have played throughout the summer I need more time to properly recover.”
