A day after the conclusion of the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament, members of the Yokozuna Deliberation Council on Monday expressed disappointment with ozeki Kisenosato’s performance.
Kisenosato, who was in position to win promotion to yokozuna had he excelled in Nagoya, turned in an 11-4 record that included three losses to lower-ranked opponents over the first week of the tournament.
“The fans had hopes for him, and he crushed them,” said council chairman Hitoshi Uchiyama. “Instead of losing when under stress, one would like to see grace under pressure.”
Council member Ryohei Miyata said, “His nerves cost him his chance at promotion to yokozuna. It’s regrettable.”
