LONDON – Shuko Aoyama and South African partner Chanelle Scheepers lost to Hsieh Su-wei of Taiwan and China’s Peng Shuai 6-4, 6-3 in the Wimbledon women’s doubles semifinals on Friday.
Aoyama was hoping to become the first Japanese player to reach a final in women’s doubles here since now-retired Ai Sugiyama and Slovenia’s Katarina Srebotnik were runnersup in 2007.
“You don’t get many opportunities to play in the semis at a Grand Slam, so I really wanted to keep the momentum going and win,” said Aoyama of her match against the No. 8 seeds. “But making it this far (to the semis) boosted my confidence.”
