Marinos oust champion Antlers from Nabisco Cup

Brazilian striker Marquinhos helped Yokohama F. Marinos reach the semifinals of the Nabisco Cup at the expense of his former club on Sunday in a 3-1 win at home to holders Kashima Antlers.

Yokohama went through 5-1 on aggregate, and Kawasaki Frontale also completed a double over Vegalta Sendai to join their Kanagawa rivals in the last four along with Urawa Reds and Kashiwa Reysol.

The two-legged semifinals are scheduled for Sept. 7 and Oct. 12, with Yokohama to play Reysol and Urawa to face Kawasaki. The final will take place on Nov. 2.

Marquinhos, who helped Antlers win three consecutive league titles, sealed victory in last week’s 2-0 win, and Manabu Saito made it 3-0 on aggregate on 39 minutes in Sunday’s game at Nissan Stadium.

Marquinhos scored with a long-range effort to put Yokohama firmly in the driver’s seat just before the hour mark. Davi pulled one back for Kashima, but Antlers’ slim hopes of a third consecutive Nabisco title were put to bed when substitute Yuta Narawa completed victory in the 90th minute.

In other games, Kengo Nakamura marked his return from international duty in style with a brace as Kawasaki beat Sendai 3-2 to go through 5-3.

Urawa Reds’ 1-1 draw at home to Cerezo Osaka was enough to see them through 3-1 over two legs, Tsukasa Umesaki canceling out Takumi Minamino’s early strike for the visitors.

Kashiwa was beaten 1-0 at home to league champions Sanfrecce Hiroshima but went through on the away-goals rule after last week’s 2-1 win at Big Arch.
