Teenager Yoshihide Kiryu came up short in his bid to become the first Japanese sprinter to break the 10-second barrier at the Golden Grand Prix on Sunday.
American Mike Rodgers won the final in 10.19 while Derrick Atkins of the Bahamas finished runnerup in 10.24 and Kiryu crossed in third in 10.40 at National Stadium.
The 17-year-old Kiryu had equaled the junior world mark after clocking 10.01 for the second-fastest time by a Japanese sprinter in his heat and ran a wind-assisted 10.03 to win the final at the Oda Memorial International last Monday.
But he was not up to the task to go under 10 seconds against a strong foreign contingent on Sunday.
Yukifumi Murakami won the men's javelin with an effort of 81.16 meters. Genki Dean could only manage fifth with 76:03
Shinji Takahira came second in the men's 200 meters in a time of 20.84 seconds. Canada's Jared Connaughton won in 20.70.
Seito Yamamoto won the men's pole vault with a 5.50-meter effort while Chisato Fukushima had the best finish by a Japanese runner in the women's 100 meters, placing fourth in 11.56.
London Olympic gold medalist Anna Chicherova of Russia (1.95 meters) won the women's high jump.
