HIROSHIMA – Jun Hirose went 4-for-4 to set a Nippon Professional Baseball record by reaching base for the 15th consecutive time in the Hiroshima Carp’s 3-2 win over the Chunichi Dragons on Friday.
During his streak, Hirose was hit by pitches three times, drew four walks, hit six singles and two doubles. He opened the scoring with a fourth-inning RBI double a Mazda Stadium.
Carp right-hander Yuichi Hisamoto (1-1) allowed just a run despite walking seven batters and allowing four hits in a 137-pitch outing against the Dragons, the team that released him last winter.
Swallows 4, Giants 2
At Tokyo’s Jingu Stadium, Yakult ace Masanori Ishikawa (2-2) held Yomiuri to two runs over seven innings, allowing the injury-plagued Swallows to overcome the Central League-leading Giants.
Wladimir Balentien opened the scoring at Jingu Stadium with a first-inning RBI double off D.J. Houlton (3-1). Shinya Miyamoto, who went 4-for-4, singled home Balentien, and Shinichi Takeuchi plated Kazuhiro Hatakeyama with the inning’s third run.
Ishikawa allowed four hits and issued two walks, while striking out four. The only trouble he faced all night came in the seventh, after an error by shortstop Ryosuke Morioka allowed the leadoff runner to reach. A one-out double by Jose Lopez advanced the lead runner to third and the Giants scored their first run on a groundout.
A walk and back-to-back infield singles brought in another run, but Ishikawa got Hisayoshi Chono to foul out to the catcher and end the inning.
The Swallows’ top draft pick last autumn, 24-year-old right-hander Taichi Ishiyama, worked a scoreless ninth, striking out the hot-hitting Lopez to end the inning. Right-hander Tetsuya Matsumoto pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to record his second save.
Tigers 10, BayStars 5
At Yokohama Stadium, Randy Messenger allowed five runs in 7 2/3 innings but earned the win as Hanshin handed Yokohama its fourth straight loss.
Takashi Toritani belted a two-run homer and drove in three runs for the Tigers, while cleanup man Matt Murton went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI and raised his batting average to .337.
