Kyodo

Japan was swept out of the Fed Cup World Group Playoffs on Sunday, falling 3-0 to Spain as Ayumi Morita lost 6-3, 7-5 to Carla Suarez Navarro.

Needing a win on the red clay at Real Club de Polo in Barcelona after back-to-back defeats on Saturday, Morita, ranked 43rd in the world, lost in 1 hour, 48 minutes in Sunday’s first reverse singles match.

Japan, which lost 3-2 to Russia in the first round of this year’s World Group, will play next year in World Group II.
