Nishikori gets off to winning start

Kyodo

Kei Nishikori disposed of Marinko Matosevic of Australia for a belated birthday gift in the first round of the men’s singles at the 2013 season-opening Brisbane International on Monday.

Fifth-seed Nishikori broke Matosevic in the 11th game of the first set en route to a 7-5, 6-2 victory in his first match of the new season. It was his 100th match win of his career.

“I wasn’t at 100 percent, but I could score points at the key areas in the match,” said Nishikori, who turned 23 on Saturday. “In my next match, I want to really try to go all out.”

Nishikori will play either Spain’s Tommy Robredo or American qualifier Ryan Harrison in his next match.
