Kei Nishikori, the world’s 16th-ranked tennis player, on Wednesday pulled out of next week’s Basel indoor tournament after failing to recover from an ankle injury.

“I had an MRI on my right ankle and unfortunately will not be able to play Basel,” the 22-year-old Nishikori, who was runnerup to Roger Federer in the final in 2011, said on his Facebook page.

“Very disappointed as I had such great memories there last year. I am now working very hard with my team to get healthy and am looking forward to Paris.”

Nishikori made history earlier this month when he became the first Japanese player to win the Japan Open, beating Canada’s Milos Raonic in the final.
