STOCKHOLM – Go Soeda defeated French qualifier Maxime Teixeira 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 on Tuesday to advance to the second round of the Stockholm Open tennis tournament.
Though outgunned 12-3 in service aces, world No. 57 Soeda converted key break chances in the first and third sets for the win. He faces top-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France in the second round.
Soeda and partner Tomasz Bednarek of Poland were set to take on American Eric Butorac and Paul Hanley of Australia in first-round doubles action on Wednesday.
Elsewhere for Japan, Tatsuma Ito and doubles partner Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil won their first-round match at Moscow’s Kremlin Cup, defeating Daniel Gimeno-Traver of Spain and Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
