Ai Fukuhara, who won a silver medal in women’s team table tennis at the London Olympics, has undergone surgery on her right elbow, it was learned Saturday.
The 23-year-old had some damaged membrane in her right elbow cleaned out and will be out of action for two to three months. It was her first surgery in 20 years of competition.
Fukuhara began feeling pain in the elbow during last summer’s China Super League season, and had been receiving treatment while competing since then.
In addition to the silver medal at the London Olympics, Fukuhara reached the quarterfinals in singles for the first time.
