Japan’s women’s volleyball team, which won its first Olympic medal in 28 years last Wednesday when it captured bronze in London, has risen to third in the sport’s latest world rankings.

Japan jumped from fifth to third when world volleyball body FIVB published its rankings on Monday. Japan’s men’s team, which failed to qualify for the London Games, fell two places to No. 17.

The top places remained unchanged, with Brazil remaining top of the men’s rankings and the United States first among women. China’s women, who lost to Japan in the quarterfinals, fell from third to fifth.
