LONDON – Yukiko Inui and Chisa Kobayashi stood in fifth place after the duet technical routine Sunday in the synchronized swimming competition at the London Olympics.
Competing last, the Japanese pair scored 93.200 heading into Monday’s free routine part of the preliminary round. Russia’s Natalia Ishchenko and Svetlana Romashina topped the 24-team field with a score of 98.200, followed by China’s Huang Xuechen and Liu Ou at 96.100.
Spain’s Ona Carbonell Ballestero and Andrea Fuentes Fache were another 0.100 further back in third.
In London, Japan is seeking to keep alive the country’s medal-winning streak in the sport that dates back to the 1984 Los Angeles Games, where synchronized swimming was introduced to the Olympic program.
