LONDON – Japanese boxer Satoshi Shimizu secured the first Olympic boxing medal for his country in 44 years as he defeated Algeria’s Mohamed Amine Ouadahi in the quarterfinals of the men’s bantamweight class at the London Games on Sunday.
Shimizu won a 17-15 decision after three rounds to advance to the semifinals. In the boxing competition, the winners of the two semifinals battle for the gold medal while the losers are both given the bronze medal.
Japan last won a boxing medal at the 1968 Mexico Olympics when Eiji Morioka took bronze in the bantamweight category.
Shimizu will meet host Britain’s Luke Campbell in Friday’s semifinal match.
