BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND – Misaki Doi scored a 7-5, 6-4 victory Wednesday over top-seeded Francesca Schiavone of Italy to earn a spot in the third round of the AEGON Classic tennis tournament.
Doi and Schiavone traded two breaks apiece en route to a 5-5 tie, before Doi went up 6-5 and broke Schiavone’s serve a third time to win the set.
Following a rain delay that interrupted the second set, Doi converted another key break chance to seal the straight-sets win over 2010 French Open champion Schiavone.
