STRASBOURG, FRANCE – Ayumi Morita booked her spot in the quarterfinals of the Internationaux de Strasbourg by defeating Virginie Razzano of France on Wednesday.
Morita dismissed the 115th-ranked Razzano in just under an hour and 20 minutes, converting five of 10 possible break points en route to a 6-1, 6-3 victory.
Thursday’s quarterfinal will pit world No. 88 Morita against American Sloane Stephens, currently ranked 79th.
In the men’s eight-team World Team Cup tournament in Dusseldorf, Germany, Japan dropped to 0-2 after losing to Argentina.
Leonardo Mayer put Argentina ahead with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Tatsuma Ito on Tuesday, and Carlos Berlocq sealed the victory Wednesday by beating Go Soeda 6-3, 6-4. The last match of the best-of-three meeting went to the Argentinian doubles pair of Juan Ignacio Chela and Juan Pablo Brzezicki over Ito and Bumpei Sato 6-7 (3-7), 6-1, 10-7.
