Giants’ Sugiuchi fans 10 batters in win over Dragons

Toshiya Sugiuchi threw one-run ball over eight solid innings, Hisayoshi Chono opened the scoring with a two-run single, and the Yomiuri Giants beat the Chunichi Dragons 4-1 on Tuesday night.

Sugiuchi (2-1) allowed four hits, including a leadoff shot to Ryosuke Hirata in the eighth, and struck out 10 batters while walking two at Nagoya Dome. Kentaro Nishimura picked up his fourth save.

Chono drove in runners from second and third with one out in the third with his single to right for a 2-0 lead. Hayato Sakamoto added a two-run double in the ninth among his three hits.

Tigers 4, Swallows 0

At Kobe’s Hotto Motto Field, Randy Messenger tossed his first complete-game shutout in his third year in Japan, and Craig Brazell crushed a two-run homer as Hanshin blanked Tokyo Yakult.

Messenger (2-0) struck out nine and held batters to four hits with one walk in a 100-pitch outing.

Orlando Roman (0-3) limited the damage to two runs in six innings but took the loss for the Swallows.

Carp 3, BayStars 0

At Kure, Hiroshima Prefecture’s Kure Niko Stadium, Eishin Soyogi and Jun Hirose hit home runs and right-hander Kan Otake improved to 2-1 in a win over Yokohama.

Otake went seven scoreless innings in an eight-strikeout effort against the last-place BayStars, snapping the Carp’s winless skid at five games, including a tie. He scattered four hits before handing the game over to the bullpen. Dennis Sarfate pitched a perfect ninth for his third save.

Yokohama was shut out for the sixth time this season.

Lions 3, Fighters 2

At Tokorozawa’s Seibu Dome, Hiroyuki Nakajima delivered a game-tying single in the third inning and Takeya Nakamura added the go-ahead run on an RBI triple off starter Tomoya Yagi (1-2) in the fifth, lifting Seibu past Hokkaido Nippon Ham.

Kazuhisa Makita (1-1) went the distance, scattering nine hits with three strikeouts and a walk. Sho Nakata and Tomohiro Nishioka had run-scoring singles for the Fighters

Hawks 2, Buffaloes 0

At Osaka’s Kyocera Dome, Wily Mo Pena hit a two-run drive off Alfredo Figaro (0-3) to break a scoreless deadlock in the seventh inning, and lefty Hiroki Yamada (2-1) pitched seven shutout innings as Fukuoka Softbank improved to 4-0 against Orix.

Masahiko Morifuku worked the eighth and Brian Falkenborg earned his PL-leading seventh save.
