KUWANA, MIE PREF. – Australia’s Brendan Jones made a stunning final-round charge with a 9-under 62 to win the JGTO season-opening Token Homemate Cup by two strokes on Sunday.
Jones reeled off nine birdies, including six on the back nine, without a bogey for a 15-under 269 total and his 11th career victory in Japan, worth ¥26 million.
The long-hitting 37-year-old took the outright lead with the first of four consecutive birdies from the 14th hole at Token Tado Country Club before pulling away for victory.
“I feel unbelievable,” said Jones, who was three shots off the lead at the start of the day. “I played probably one of the best rounds of my life today. To do it in front of so many people in the gallery and (final-round playing partner Ryo) Ishikawa, it’s just a dream start to 2012.”
