Japan defeated in three matches at Tokyo Sevens

Japan lost all three of its Group A matches on the opening day of the two-day Tokyo Sevens rugby tournament Saturday.

Japan fell to England 15-5, Fiji 26-7 and France 24-5 at Prince Chichibu Memorial Ground as the host country failed to finish in the top two in Group A for a quarterfinal berth in the seventh leg of the seven-man rugby World Series.

England, Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, Wales, Argentina, Samoa and South Africa advanced to the quarterfinals.

Japan will play the losers from other first-round groups on Sunday.

New Zealand leads the World Series standings with 111 points, two ahead of Fiji.

Rugby sevens will make its Olympic debut at the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro.
