Swimmer Haruka Ueda set a new national record in the women’s 100-meter freestyle at the Tokyo championships Sunday.
Ueda touched the wall at Tokyo Tatsumi International Swimming Center in 54.33 seconds. She bettered the mark of Misaki Yamaguchi, who timed 54.43 in one of the now-banned ultrafast swimsuits in 2009.
“It’s a confidence boost to get a personal best. I want to achieve the Olympic qualifying standards in both the 100 and 200 meters at the national championships. I aim to have overwhelming victories,” said Ueda.
The nationals being held from April 2-8 in Tokyo will double as a qualifier for this summer’s London Games.
