Top pick Alfredo lived up to his billing Sunday, winning the Asahi Cup Futurity Stakes in breakaway fashion in the race for 2-year-old colts.

Alfredo, ridden by jockey Craig Williams, pulled ahead in the final straight to win the race in 1 minute 33.4 seconds on the 1,600-meter turf track at Nakayama Racecourse.

Meiner Robusto, the fourth favorite, came second two lengths behind, while Leo Active placed third, another half length back.

Alfredo got off to a flying start and maintained the third or fourth position for most of the race before storming forward along the inside in the final furlong.

Williams won the race for the first time ever and it was trainer Takahisa Tezuka’s first G1 triumph.
