MIKI, HYOGO PREF. – Shiho Oyama rode on some luck to prevail in a playoff against U.S. LPGA star Paula Creamer, claiming her first tour victory in three years at the Masters GC Ladies on Sunday.
Oyama, who teed off her final round two shots behind following the completion of the thunderstorm-suspended second round, fired a 5-under 67 to draw even with Creamer, who shot a 65 for a 7-under 209 total at Masters Golf Club.
Oyama birdied the third extra hole, where she pushed her drive into the gallery before the ball bounced onto the fairway, to clinch her 12th overall victory on the Japanese women’s tour and ¥22.14 million in prize money. It was Oyama’s first victory since winning the same tournament in 2008.
“This is the happiest I’ve felt in my life,” said Oyama. “I kind of lost my motivation after injuring my elbow but so many people have supported me.”
