YANG MEI, TAIWAN – Ai Miyazato shot a 4-under 68 on Thursday to share the first-round lead with world No. 1 and home favorite Yani Tseng at the Taiwan Championship.
Miyazato birdied four of her last five holes at Sunrise Golf & Country Club in the U.S. LPGA Tour event held as part of Taiwan’s 100th anniversary celebrations.
“It was really windy, and playing conditions were tough out there,” the seventh-ranked player said. “But I played really well. I putted well, especially the last five holes.”
Miyazato began her round on the back nine and canceled out a bogey on the 16th with a birdie two holes later.
“I grew up in a windy place, so I really like to play in the wind. But today was really hard. I kept hitting the fairways and kept hitting the greens, so that’s why I played solid today,” she continued.
Mika Miyazato was in a six-way tie for sixth after a 70. Momoko Ueda, bogeyed the final two holes for a 74 that left her tied for 38th.
