CHIBA – South Korea’s Cho Min Gyu shot a 4-under 67 on Thursday to take a two-stroke lead after the first round of the Japan Open, the last major of the year on the JGTO Tour.
The 23-year-old Cho, who picked up his first win in Japan at the Kansai Open in August, carded six birdies and two bogeys at Takanodai Country Club.
“I played well today,” Cho said. “I drove the ball well, hitting nine fairways.”
But Cho said other players had played well too, including a big group just two shots back.
“Many players took advantage of favorable course conditions today to post good scores. This is the biggest tournament in Japan, so I feel a little bit of pressure.”
