Japan advances in Fed Cup play

Kyodo

Ayumi Morita secured Japan’s promotion into World Group 2 on Sunday after beating Argentina’s Aranza Salut 6-2, 6-1 in the opening singles match on the final day of their Fed Cup playoff matchup.

Morita breezed past Salut, who replaced Maria Irigoyen after she failed to win a game in Saturday’s singles against Misaki Doi, in just under an hour at Bourbon Beans Dome, giving Japan an unassailable 3-0 lead.

Rika Fujiwara and Kurumi Nara later beat Mailen Auroux and Irigoyen 6-1, 6-3 in the remaining dead doubles rubber.

Japan returns to World Group 2 for the first time in three years.

The tie was originally to have been played in April but was postponed due to the devastating March 11 earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan.
