Japan earns 1-2 finish in pole vault

Daichi Sawano led Japan to a 1-2 finish in the men’s pole vault final Friday, the second day of action at the Asian Athletics Championships.

Sawano cleared 5.50 meters to claim his third Asian title and first in three meets, while Hiroki Ogita was second on his debut at the event and Yang Yansheng of China was third.

China’s Bingtian Su pipped Japan’s Masashi Eriguchi by 0.07 seconds in the men’s 100-meter final with a time of 10.21, while the bronze went to Sota Kawatsura in 10.30.

The four-day meet at Kobe Universiade Memorial Stadium doubles as the final qualifier for the world athletics championships starting Aug. 27 in Daegu, South Korea.
