TENDO, YAMAGATA PREF. – Former Asian champions Urawa Reds continued to loiter around the relegation zone as Zeljko Petrovic’s side was held to a 0-0 draw at Montedio Yamagata in the J. League on Wednesday night.
Reds remained unbeaten for a fourth straight game but allowed 16th-place Ventforet Kofu to pull level on points at 14 after the Yamanashi minnows won 2-1 away to Albirex Niigata thanks to Katsuya Ishihara’s 71st-minute winner.
Kofu, 10 behind Urawa on goal difference, halted a four-game slide with a precious third victory of the season. Fourteenth-place Niigata is only a point above Reds, who have a J1-high eight draws from 15 matches.
“We didn’t create any big chances,” Petrovic said. “I expect Urawa Reds to win wherever we go so in that respect I’m disappointed we only picked up a point.”
“But on the other hand, maybe we should be happy with a point because our performance was so poor tonight,” he added.
