Miyazato falls at Match Play quarters

Kyodo

Ai Miyazato sent home Park In Bee but her run at the Sybase Match Play Championship came to an end Saturday with defeat to Cristie Kerr in the quarterfinals.

Miyazato beat South Korean Park 2 and 1 in the third round but her hopes of reaching the semis were dashed as Kerr prevailed 3 and 2 at the $1.5 million event at Hamilton Farm.

Kerr made four birdies to take a 3-up lead at the ninth hole and although Miyazato made birdies on Nos. 10 and 11, her American opponent picked up two more shots and sealed victory on the 16th.

“It was a great match, I think closer than the score indicated,” said Kerr. “I started off great, made birdie and she (Miyazato) made a long putt for birdie on the 2nd hole when I was in there tight and I missed the putt.”

“It was close until I was able to get the 3-up lead after nine.”
