GLADSTONE, NEW JERSEY – Ai Miyazato advanced to the second round of the Sybase Match Play Championship by defeating South Korea’s Park Hee Young in 21 holes, but compatriot Mika Miyazato was eliminated in the first round on Thursday.
Sixth-seeded Ai Miyazato birdied the 18th hole to force extra holes and went on to sink a birdie putt from about 23 feet on the par-3, 21st hole.
“It was a tough match,” the former world No. 1 said. “She was playing so well that I just couldn’t take control for most of the day. I’m just glad that I made some nice birdies in pressure situations in the end.”
Mika Miyazato lost to Canada’s Alena Sharp 4 and 3.
Sharp went 4 up after 10 holes before Miyazato finally got one back on the 11th.
