Late surge gives Ahn first major title

Kyodo

South Korea’s Ahn Sun Ju pulled away with three late birdies to win the World Ladies Championship by three strokes Sunday.

Ahn shot a 3-under 69 to finish at 10-under 278 at Ibaraki Golf Club for her first major and fifth career title on the Japan LPGA Tour.

Miki Saiki and Taiwan’s Teresa Lu tied for second after rounds of 70 and 71, respectively.

Shortly after Saiki, in the second-to-last group, moved into a share of the lead with a birdie on the 14th hole, Ahn birdied the same hole to take the lead for good.

The 23-year-old from Gyeonggi went on to make birdie putts of 10 feet on the 16th and 7 feet on the 18th, while Saiki parred out her remaining four holes.

“I just focused on every shot, and I’m so thrilled to have won this major,” Ahn said. “I was very nervous on the course until I finally found my game after a birdie on 14.”
