Japan unlikely to take part in Copa

Kyodo News

Japan Football Association president Junji Ogura will tell the South American confederation (CONMEBOL) that Japan will likely have to pull out of the Copa America this summer after the March 11 earthquake triggered an overhaul to this season’s J. League fixtures.

Japan has been invited as a guest team to take part in the July 1-24 South American continental championship in Argentina.

“It’s not for me to say because it’s not our decision, but they understand our situation that we have to use the month of July,” Ogura said on Sunday, before boarding a flight for CONMEBOL’s headquarters in Paraguay.
