‘King Kazu’ breaks own J2 record

OITA (Kyodo) Former Japan striker Kazuyoshi Miura rewrote his own record as the oldest player to score in the second division when he netted his third goal of the season in FC Yokohama’s 2-2 draw against Oita Trinita on Saturday.

Miura, whose goalscoring exploits during his heyday earned him the nickname “King Kazu,” set a new mark at 43 years, 9 months and 8 days with a spot-on shot in the 50th minute to level the score at 1-all in the final match of the season.

It was his first start in a match this season and his first appearance since playing against Tokushima Vortis on Nov. 14.

Former Brazil international and ex-Japan coach Zico holds the oldest record in the first division, scoring at 41 years, three months and 12 days for Kashima Antlers in 1994.
