HAKUBA, Nagano Pref. (Kyodo) Daiki Ito took advantage of a weakened field to win his third event of the season in ski jumping’s summer Grand Prix series on Saturday.
Ito posted jumps of 131.5 and 128.5 meters on the large hill in Hakuba to finish with a winning total of 271.6 points. Poland’s Dawid Kubacki was second with 270.0 points and compatriot Kamil Stoch third with 269.1.
With his third victory from six events this season, Vancouver Olympian Ito moved to the top of the Grand Prix points standings.
Among other Japanese competitors, Fumihisa Yumoto was sixth, Taku Takeuchi was seventh and Shohei Tochimoto finished ninth.
Veterans Noriaki Kasai, who is nursing a sore right knee, and Takanobu Okabe both sat out the event that was missing most of Europe’s top ski jumpers.
