Autumn Basho ticket sales sluggish

Tickets went on sale at Ryogoku Kokugikan on Saturday for next month’s Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament but advance sales for the 15-day meet were sluggish in the wake of the latest scandal to tarnish the image of Japan’s national sport.

A total of 962 people came to the booth on the first day to buy tickets, down about 40 percent from 1,698 a year earlier.

On Friday, about 700 numbered tickets were distributed for those who wanted to book their seats for the autumn tourney, half of the level for the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament in Tokyo in May.
