Nara nabs spot in Wimbledon singles main draw

ROEHAMPTON, England (Kyodo) Japan’s Kurumi Nara earned a place in the women’s singles main draw of the Wimbledon Championships on Thursday with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 win over Stephanie Dubois of Canada in the third and final round of qualifying.

Nara will compete in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament for the second time in her career, following her first-round exit at the French Open last month.

Japanese compatriot Go Soeda lost in the final round of the men’s singles qualifying Thursday but gained entry into the main draw as a “lucky loser” after the withdrawals of five players, including David Nalbandian of Argentina.

Kei Nishikori, Kimiko Date Krumm and Ayumi Morita will also be playing in the main draw.
