OSAKA (Kyodo) Nobuo Nashiro lost a unanimous decision to Mexican challenger Hugo Cazares on Saturday, failing in his third attempt to defend the WBA super flyweight title.
Nashiro outpunched Cazares but fell victim to some heavy hits from his top-ranked opponent that at times left him on the verge of kissing the canvas at Osaka Prefectural Gymnasium.
Nashiro fought Cazares to a split-decision draw last September and was looking for a clear victory in the rematch. But from the opening bell he was never in control and things got out of hand as the fight progressed.
Judges Raul Caiz and Glen Feldman of the United States scored the match 117-111 in favor of Cazares, while South African Stanley Christodolou had it 115-113.
