Hozumi Hasegawa, who lost his WBC bantamweight belt in a knockout by Mexican Fernando Montiel on Friday, has suffered a broken jaw, Shinsei Boxing Gym President Masato Yamashita said Saturday.
Hasegawa, 29, is scheduled to undergo surgery and is expected to be out of action for an extended period.
WBO bantamweight champion Montiel hit Hasegawa with a crushing left to the right side of the jaw in the dying seconds of the fourth round before the bout was stopped at Nippon Budokan.
Hasegawa was trying to defend the title for the 11th straight time. Montiel successfully unified the title.
